Gary Lien

Gary Lien, Farm Manager

Calmar, IA

Gary joined the dairy team at Iowa’s Dairy Center after over 35 years of owning and managing Velkommen-Valley Farms with his wife, Patti, and four children. He is a graduate from Iowa State University earning his degree in dairy science. Previously, Gary has served as a member of the Winneshiek County Extension Council, Winneshiek County Dairy Promoters, was a delegate for Foremost Farms and Accelerated Genetics. He oversees daily operations of the Dairy Center’s farm in addition to mixing feed and providing general maintenance and herdsperson duties.

Jon Meyer

Jon Meyer, Dairy Herdsperson

Ossian, IA

Jon comes to the Dairy Center after many years of dairy industry experience. Through networking he worked for Genex Cooperative for 20 years and Accelerated Genetics for five years as an AI technician. He oversees herd reproduction, including breeding and synchronization programs, as well as mixes feed and manages the two Lely A4 robots on the farm. In addition, Jon manages his own 35 head cow/calf operation.

Amy Baumler

Amy Baumler, Assistant Dairy Herdsperson

St. Lucas, IA

Amy joined the dairy team at Iowa’s Dairy Center after developing and owning a herd of Holsteins and Jerseys. Previously, she earned her degree in Dairy Science from Northeast Iowa Community College. At the Dairy Center, Amy oversees transition cow and parlor management in addition to working with the robots. She enjoys camping, reading and spending time with her family.

Jodie Mumm

Jodie Mumm, Assistant Dairy Herdsperson

Bloomington, WI

Jodie comes to Iowa’s Dairy Center bringing experience from growing up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin and working on several other large dairy farms. She earned her degree in Beef Science Technology from Northeast Iowa Community College and a degree in culinary arts from Southwest Tech. At the Dairy Center, Jodie oversees calf management and performs general herdsperson duties. When she’s not on the farm, Jodie enjoys cooking and horseback riding.

Mariah Schmitt

Mariah Schmitt, Dairy Center Coordinator

Fort Atkinson, IA

Mariah grew up on her family's dairy farm outside of Fort Atkinson where her family milks 50 Holstein cows in addition to her small herd of Guernseys. Mariah graduated from Iowa State University with degrees in dairy science and agriculture & society. At Iowa State, she was a member of the Dairy Science Club and Dairy Judging and Dairy Challenge teams. Additionally, she was active in 4-H and FFA and served as the 2013-2014 Iowa Dairy Princess.
